Heavy Haul/Lightweight Equipment

Situation:
In February of 2008, Keller Trucking identified a need with a local Fortune 500 company that wanted to ship more of their product on trailers without going over the legal limit of 80,000 lb. gross vehicle weight.  Their product is heavy, so the trailers always weighed out before they were cubed out. Solution:
Keller Trucking began working with our tractor and trailer manufacturers to devise a plan to reduce the overall weight of our tractor-trailer combinations in order to be able to haul more weight. After 12 months of work, we were able to reduce the tractor-trailer combination weight by 22%, thus allowing us to haul up to 53,000 lbs. per trailer, and adding an additional 4 pallets of our customer’s product per load. Not only did this allow them to ship more product per truck, but it also reduced their cost per unit. Additional savings were recognized such as less fuel surcharge (fewer trucks needed), bill of lading costs, reduction in dock time, and the environmental savings, in particular with less CO2 emissions being emitted into the air (again, with fewer trucks needed, less loads being shipped).
Keller Trucking has duplicated our “Heavy Haul” program with three other manufacturers over the last 2 years with overwhelming success. In fact, we have continued to purchase more lightweight equipment due to the on-going demand to ship more product with fewer trucks.
